Q. Who provides the NHREADS workshops?
Workshops and in-district follow-up training are provided by NHREADS subject area consultants, all of whom have extensive classroom experience and/or experience in teacher preparation programs. They are knowledgeable regarding the research and practice of increasing student comprehension in math, science, social studies or language arts.
Q. What kinds of experiences can I expect from a NHREADS workshop?
Workshops may begin with an overview of the scientific research regarding how teachers can help students develop deep understanding as they read, watch, or listen to increasingly challenging subject matter. Workshops then present, in an interactive format, reading comprehension strategies that have been shown to be effective in math, science, social studies and language arts classrooms. Optimally, the work then moves in-district, with consultants helping teachers work with their own materials so that they can immediately use what they have learned with their students. Finally, the work becomes embedded in the district, with teachers helping other teachers become adept in the use of comprehension strategies.
Q. What is the cost of a NHREADS workshop?
Because NHREADS is funded by a Title II-A federal professional development grant, schools designated “in need of improvement” and schools with significant numbers of students receiving free and/or reduced lunches may receive NHREADS services at little cost. NHREADS will discuss levels of cost sharing on a case-by-case basis. In general, NHREADS workshops will be both high quality and economical.
